# Set up the bot for your server

When the bot joins a server it posts a short welcome in a channel it can send in, covering the three things worth doing first: choosing a prefix, looking through the settings, and deciding on the "did you mean...?" nudge. It only posts this once, and you can bring the same guide back any time with `!setup`. If the bot ever seems unresponsive, `!setup check` tests its permissions in the current channel.

Everything the bot does per server lives in one panel. Anyone can look at it, and members with **Manage Server** or **Administrator** can change it.

```text
!settings
```

The panel groups settings by area and marks anything you've changed from the default with ✱. Until you've set a prefix, a notification channel, and a command channel, it also shows a short "Setup" reminder with the command for each. Each setting is numbered, so you can refer to it by name or number.

## Change a setting

```text
!settings <name or number> <value>
!settings reset <name or number>
```

For example:

```text
!settings casino off
!settings maxbet 5000
!settings channel #bot-commands
!settings 7 5000
!settings reset maxbet
```

If you mistype a name, the bot suggests the closest matches.

## All settings

| Setting         | Type                     | Default      | What it controls                                                                                |

> **Tip**

> Every setting also has a shortcut command: `!prefix`, `!dym`, `!ar`, `!flat`, and `!nt`. They edit the same values.

## Common setups

#### Keep bot chatter tidy

Send all commands to one channel so the rest of your server stays quiet.

```text
!settings channel #bot-commands
```

Undo it with `!settings channel none`.

#### No gambling

Turn the casino off entirely, and keep the earning commands.

```text
!settings casino off
```

To block only some games, list them instead:

```text
!settings games slots,crash,keno
```

#### Cap the stakes

Allow the casino but limit how much anyone can wager at once.

```text
!settings maxbet 2000
```

Use `!settings maxbet 0` for no cap.

#### Reward chatters

Pay members a small amount of tokens for talking.

```text
!ar on
```

See [Earn tokens with the bot](/bot-tokens#activity-rewards) for how much and how often.

#### Another bot uses the same prefix

The best fix is your own prefix, so commands don't trigger both bots. Sharing a prefix can also skew things like activity tracking.

```text
!prefix ?
```

If you'd rather keep it, silence the suggestions the bot sends when someone runs the other bot's commands.

```text
!dym off
```

When the bot notices another bot answering the same commands in a server that still uses `!`, it posts a one-time message suggesting a different prefix. Turn that off with `!settings prefixhint off`.

## Change the prefix

```text
!prefix
!prefix ?
```

The first form shows your current prefix. The second sets it, up to 5 characters. It takes effect straight away, and the bot keeps answering to `@FluxerList` mentions whatever you choose.

## FLAT tracking

FLAT is on by default and powers your server's activity score. Check it with `!flat`, and turn it off with `!flat off`. Read [FLAT activity score](/flat) for what's counted and how privacy works.

## Permissions the bot needs

In any channel where you want it to answer, the bot needs:

* **Send Messages**
* **Embed Links**
* **Read Message History**

If it's missing one, it posts a short message listing what to grant. Two optional extras improve things:

* **Manage Webhooks** lets [notifications](/bot-notifications) post with FluxerList branding.
* **Create Invite** lets `!list` generate a permanent invite for you instead of asking you to paste one.

#### [Notifications](/bot-notifications)

Bumps, votes, and listing updates in a channel you choose.
